The COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges to all facets of our lives. The inability to go about life, as usual, has caused us to reimagine ways to accomplish our everyday tasks. This has also impacted NPMA’s ability to continue to offer education as we have in the past. From in-person classes to our seminars, our teamhad to come up with new avenues to provide the continuing education that our members need to move forward in their careers.
For many, the highlight of NPMA’s annual offerings is our National Education Seminar. The ability to attend a four-day event with a wide variety of training sessions, coupled with the networking of colleagues from around the country (and even the world!) is something our members look forward to each year. Our NES Planning Committee, staff, and event partners in Dallas worked very hard to put together multiple contingency plans to hold the event. However, based on the most recent guidance we have received, the obstacles and costs to doing so are just too great. Because of this, the committee has made the difficult decision to cancel NES for 2020.
We made this decision based on a number of factors which include: updated guidance from the CDC for holding large events and the need to maintain 6’ of social distancing;our discussions with our host hotel regarding available meeting space and the number of attendees we could accommodate in each room; limits on foodservice and available amenities within the hotel; and feedback from members who have stated that their employers have put limits on non-essential travel, which impacted both attendees and speakers abilities to attend an in-person event this August.
All paid registrations for NES will have the option of either a full refund or a transfer of the paid registration to NES 2021 in Reno. We will be sending a separate email to all registrants with more information on these options. If you have made a reservation through the official NES room block, these reservations will automatically be canceled by the hotel. If you used an outside provider to book your room, or you booked at another hotel, you will need to cancel your reservation directly with the hotel. For those who have registered for a pre-NES course, a separate email will also be sent with details on your options.
The NES Planning Committee is now shifting its focus to planning online education options for our members. The Regional and National Board of Delegates meetings will take place virtually and we are working on options to hold the elections via electronic media. We will have more information on all of this in the next couple of weeks, so watch your email for more details!
We know this is a difficult time for everyone and our thoughts are with each of you. We wish you all good health and we look forward to seeing you in person at a future NPMA event soon!
